Interactive Math Lesson - Finding Median and Mode

It's time to practice finding median and mode with your fourth grade class! In this interactive graphing and data activity from I Know It, children will practice finding the median and mode of a data set. Here are a few examples of the types of questions your students may encounter in this math activity:

  • "Find the median of the set of numbers: 15, 25, 23."
  • "Find the mode of the set of numbers: 20, 17, 19, 30, 17."
  • "The table below shows the average amount of precipitation in Wilmington, North Carolina from June to October. What is the mode?"
  • "Say Cheese Pizza offers free delivery on orders that cost $50 or more. The graph below shows how many free deliveries they had on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. What is the median number of free deliveries on these days?"
  • "Fifteen students from Miss Durham's class bought books at the school book fair. The line plot below shows the number of books each student bought. What is the mode?"

As your students work through the math practice activity, they can count on handy features to help them make the most of their practice session:

  • Hint Button - Students can click on the hint button if they get stuck on a question. The hint consists of a written or pictorial clue that will point them in the right direction without making the solution too easy.
  • Explanation Page - A detailed explanation page will pop up on the practice screen when students get an answer wrong. The explanation shows the right answer accompanied by an easy-to-follow explanation to help students learn from prior mistakes.
  • Read-Aloud Button - Students can click on the speaker icon in the upper-left corner of their practice screen to hear the question read out loud to them in a clear voice. This resource is a great option for ESL/ELL students and children who are auditory learners.
  • Progress-Tracker - Students can check out the progress-tracker in the upper-right corner of their practice screen to see how many questions they have answered so far out of the total number of questions in the math activity.
  • Score-Tracker - Students can also view the score-tracker to see how many points they have earned for correct responses.

All of these tools were carefully designed to help your students grow their math skills and achieve more in their online math practice sessions.
